Our Purpose

This is a translation of Street Studies board approved mission statement - based on our official, current and binding bylaws.

The association's purpose is based on “Almennyttighed”, a Danish concept used to describe a philosophy assuming that all actions must be of overall benefit to society. This is closely tied to our not-for-profit status, ensuring a fundamental belief in doing what is right for the broader society.

We work towards the global goals of democratizing urban planning through the involvement of civil society and civic processes. In continuation of the democratization processes, we are working on prevention and safety projects to help positive physical and behavioral change in challenged urban spaces. A revitalization of neglected places where civil society is mobilized through urban creativity - including minorities and hard-to-reach audiences.

Street Studies wants to act as a knowledge and project partner on urban space projects, that are actively working to include the area's actors in the design of meaningful, creative and social urban spaces. We do this as advisors, project partners and through speaking on behalf of the civil society.

We work actively with municipal town planners, associations, users, cultural and social area initiatives, the political strata, and the municipality's other partners found in urban spaces, national foundations and other interest organizations.

It is our role to be a link between all these moving parts, to continually keep us relevant to the actors and to play a proactive role, where the individual actors can not solve local urban problems on their own. In this role, we need to keep ourselves up to date about new national and international societal trends, as well as study elements from best practice cases, to create the greatest possible social value in urban spaces. In this regard, we act as an urban space democratizing and non-profit think tank that advises municipal urban planning.

Street Studies uses creative approaches in the way we bring about urban change. We do this to make the change more open and welcoming to people who prefer alternative forms of communication - and thereby involve more target groups.

We are interested in both user- and artist-driven murals that:

  1. strengthen the local cohesion,

  2. reduce negative atmospheres and

  3. strengthen the identity of places.

In addition, we want to strengthen local opportunities for street culture, including the development of facilities for skate, parkour and similar activities.

At the same time, we want to use our experience in positive change processes, entrepreneurship and creative change approaches to support the global climate agenda wherever possible.

As a non-profit, any profits will be targeted to the organization's purpose and support for similar initiatives, our own development and publicly available urban space research. The organization's spending is done with respect to overall benefit of societal agendas, thus by nature creating a range of CSR benefits.

The association is a tax-exempt non-profit association. Street Studies Cph works as a base for our international activities and for our partners around the globe, following the same strict moral code.
